Chapter Three
They took the last submersible the Institute could still afford down to the Malant nine weeks later, and Aveline insisted on going, and no one had the standing to refuse her.
The descent through four miles of water was the same as it had been at forty-one. The blue draining to green to nothing. The instruments murmuring. The cold that seeped through the hull no matter how they heated the cabin, the specific cold of a place light had never reached. She had forgotten how much she loved it and how much it frightened her, and she was old enough now to know those were the same feeling.
The lights came up on the fracture floor and there they were. The rows. The skulls all facing the same direction, into the current, into the slow eternal read-head drift of the diamantinae. Out beyond it a diamantinae moved along a ribcage older than the human genus, laying down its patient white lattice, mending a break, restoring a lost line of a message from a civilization of the deep dark that had chosen, when its end came, not to build a monument but a library — and not out of stone, which cracks, or metal, which corrodes, but out of the living, dying, ever-renewing bodies of the great whales that had not even evolved yet when the first block was written, so that the archive would be repaired forever by biology itself, long after its authors were less than fossils, less than memory, less than the word were.
Do not read us cold. A warning, or a plea. She wasn’t sure the difference mattered.
“We should stop sequencing,” she said.
Static.
“Aveline?”
“We should stop. We’re reading it cold. We’re a scavenger species that found a working machine and started prying it apart to see what it does. Every sample we take, every carcass we lift — we’re corrupting the drive faster than the diamantinae can repair it.” Her voice did not shake. She had waited a long time to be this certain. “They asked us to tend the tenders. Not to read them. Not yet. Maybe not ever, if this is the only copy.”
The submersible hung in the dark above eleven hundred kilometers of somebody’s whole remembered self, and the small pale servants moved among the bones as they had for five million years, faithful and mindless and enough, and above them all the surface of the sea went on forgetting everything, the way surfaces do.
“Bring me up,” Aveline said. “And then we cover it. All of it. We tell them it was only ever a graveyard.”
The winch hummed. The dark let go of them, reluctantly, the way it lets go of everything, in the end, but not of this. Never of this.
